Terminology page

This page has been set up as tool to allow for students to add terms and definitions in the lead up to end of year exams. Please make sure that you put your initials after each definition that you add. Please DO NOT delete other peoples efforts.
Each student must add at least two definitions of their own.

Key terms

Hardware - the physical components of the computer. Fall into the categories of input, process, storage and output devices (MRA)

Software - the instructions that tell the hardware what to do.

Mnemonics:

Binary code - is the representing of text or computer processor instructions by the use of the binary numbers "0" and "1"

Algorithm: an algorithm is an effective method for solving a problem expressed as a finite sequence of steps (Shane- Edited by Grizzman)

Storyboard is a a series of illustrated image or pictures displayed in sequence for a purpose of visualizing a motion picture (By Shane) don't touch this woopie or else ya mum
Flowchart - A flowchart is a common type of diagram, that represents an algorithm or process, showing the steps as \boxes.

Internet Terminology
Cache- is memory that is stored on most recently accessed pages. It speeds up the processor.

Email- a process of sending text messages in electronic form. Messages can also include images and video clips called attachments.

Firewall- utility software that protects the computer from unwanted viruses or programs

Cookies- are tracking tools (text file) that are attached to a website that leave a foot print of where you have been.

Hyperlink- a link that that sends you to a separate webpage or text file

Hypermedia- is a display object that can link you to new information e.g. video or image.

HTTP – Stands for hypertext transfer protocol

Internet- Is a network of computers. It is the physical components e.g. nodes, hubs, cables and modems.

Intranet- it is like the internet but is a private network where only computers of the network can enter e.g. Xavier.lism.

Protocol- The rules that govern the transmission of data.

Proxy server- Computer that is dedicated on allowing computers on a LAN network access to the internet, it decides what information is allowed in or out. Responsible for caching websites

URL - Universal Resource Locator, Address of a website

Video conference- Exchanging live video data via the internet. Saves money on transport.

Web browser-A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web e.g. Google.

World wide web- is software that allows computers/users to navigate the network that is the web.
